How to Care for Your Wedding Suit After the Big Day
One of the biggest advantages of buying your wedding suit at G&G instead of renting it is that you walk away with something that lasts. But only if you take care of it properly. Here's the short guide to suit maintenance.
After the Wedding: The First 48 Hours
Don't leave your suit balled up in a garment bag. Hang it on a proper wooden hanger in a well-ventilated area as soon as possible. If it got sweaty (which it will — weddings are emotional), let it air out completely before storing it.
Spot Cleaning vs. Dry Cleaning
For small stains, spot clean with a slightly damp cloth and let it air dry. Avoid saturating the fabric. Dry cleaning should be reserved for major cleaning — too-frequent dry cleaning can actually break down the fibers of premium wool suits over time.
Storage
Store your suit in a breathable garment bag (not plastic). A cloth or canvas bag lets the fabric breathe and prevents moisture build-up that can lead to mold or musty odors. Keep it away from direct sunlight.
Steaming vs. Ironing
Steam is your friend. A handheld steamer is the safest way to remove wrinkles from a suit jacket and trouser. Ironing directly on the fabric — especially without a pressing cloth — can create shiny marks that are impossible to remove.
Wear It Again
This is the whole point of owning your suit. Wear it to the next wedding you attend, to holiday parties, job interviews, dinners. A well-made suit that fits you properly will serve you for a decade or more.
