How to Pick the Perfect Wedding Tie (and What to Avoid)

Grooms often spend hours choosing the suit and five minutes choosing the tie. Given how much the tie affects the overall look — especially in photos — it deserves more attention. Here's what to consider.

Match the Formality of the Event

A black bow tie signals black tie formal. A standard necktie reads as business formal or semi-formal. A knit tie or linen tie leans casual. Make sure your tie matches the tone of your venue and ceremony.

Coordinate, Don't Match Exactly

Your tie doesn't need to be the same color as the bridesmaid dresses — but it should feel like it belongs in the same color family. If the bridesmaids are in dusty rose, a warm blush or champagne tie on the groomsmen creates cohesion without looking costume-like.

The Width Question

Slim ties look modern and work with slim-fit suits. Standard-width ties are more classic and pair better with traditional cuts. As a general rule, match the tie width to the lapel width of your suit.

What to Avoid

Avoid patterns that are too busy — they distract from the face in photos. Avoid shiny polyester fabrics that catch light unflattering. And avoid any tie that doesn't feel like you — your wedding day should look like the best version of yourself, not a costume.
